How long does The Grand Book Archive Demo take?

The developer estimates 1–2 hours with upgrades and about 8 hours without upgrades. These are planning estimates for the demo, not measured averages or completion deadlines. For a manual sorting run, allow several sessions rather than assuming the shorter estimate applies.

Choose a time budget for your play style

The estimates come from the developer’s Steam demo release announcement. They describe the demo, not the unreleased full game.

Using upgrades: 1–2 hours

Use this as the developer’s intended-play estimate when you plan to use the upgrade system. If you are unsure what to buy, compare the documented upgrade effects rather than assuming every purchase saves the same amount of time.

No upgrades: about 8 hours

A manual run is a different commitment. Leave room for breaks and for finding books you have not learned to recognize. The estimate does not specify an optimal route or establish a speedrun record.

Some upgrades, or a repeat run

The announcement does not give a separate estimate for every purchase pattern or later run. Avoid calculating a new duration by averaging the two published numbers: they describe different ways of playing.

Fastest reported times are not a verified leaderboard

The official page lists the demo as taking a few hours on average, while the public comments reviewed on September 20, 2026 show a much wider range. These are attributed player reports, not records verified by the site.

Reported timeContext in the commentHow to use it
42:15Player said they had just finished; the player later rechecked the display and the developer called the time impressive.Lowest report in the September 20 comment sample; not a current leaderboard or world-record claim.
57:54Player posted it as an updated best after an earlier 61:12 report.A repeat-run community datapoint, without a published route or ruleset.
80:37Player reported a completed run and separately discussed cursor-screen movement.Useful evidence that controls and play style affect elapsed time.
91:44Player described it as their fastest time after two full runs and mentioned a hoped-for sub-45 attempt. An aspiration, not evidence that a sub-45 route is established.

Read the official itch.io comment list for the original reports. Because the comments do not publish a common ruleset, video proof, or versioned split times, this page does not rank players or promise a fastest route.

The 299-coin check for a no-upgrade run

The official itch.io notes describe a specific end state: finishing with no skills and no upgrades leaves 299 unused gold coins, corresponding to 299 shelves.

  1. Keep the condition attached to the number

This check applies when you finish without skills and upgrades. It is not a universal target balance for runs where you bought upgrades or used skills.

  2. Check shelves as well as your balance

The demo’s 2,990 books and the documented requirement of 10 identical books per completed shelf are consistent with 299 shelves. The coin note describes the finished run; merely seeing a particular balance does not prove every shelf is complete.

  3. Deal with a missing book before treating the run as finished

If a final book appears missing, the developer’s workaround is to exit and re-enter. Follow the save and missing-book checklist first. For a wrong book blocking a shelf, use the sorting guide.

Finished the Demo: what should you do next?

First confirm your shelves are complete and save the run. You do not have to chase a fast time to enjoy a manual run. Full-game goals such as more archive themes and an expanded skill tree are separate from the Demo you have just finished.

  1. Check the finished archive before starting over

Use the shelf and missing-book checks above, then Save and Exit. The 299-coin check applies only to a run with no skills or upgrades; a different balance after purchases does not by itself mean you failed.

  2. Choose whether another sorting run appeals to you

A manual run or a different mix of upgrades can change how you spend your time. These are optional play choices, not extra Demo levels or a verified fastest route. The public sources checked here do not explain the exact reset command or which currency and upgrades carry into a new run, so do not reset a save on the assumption that everything transfers.

  3. Separate the full-game goal from Demo unlocks

Responding to a player who asked what comes after one library, the developer described achievement goals, faster runs using meta upgrades, and different archive themes. That explains the intended longer-term progression; it does not publish a complete achievement list, exact thresholds or a Demo ascension procedure. [1] The October Steam update also describes themes and Workshop as full-game plans. See the current Demo and full-game comparison before looking for those options in the Demo.

Planning breaks and checking completion

Do I need to finish in one sitting?

The official page says the game autosaves every minute and provides Save and Exit to preserve the latest progress. Use Save and Exit at a stopping point rather than relying on the last timed autosave. See the save guide before closing a long session.

Is 299 coins a Steam achievement?

The source describes a no-skill, no-upgrade completion state. It does not name an achievement or give an unlock condition, so this guide makes no achievement claim.

Does the full game take the same time?

The quoted estimate is for the demo. Additional progression and archive customization are planned for the full game; its duration is not established by these numbers. See the demo and full-game comparison for what is currently available.

Choose the upgrade-assisted estimate if you want a shorter planned session, or set aside multiple sessions for a manual run. Use the 299-coin note only with its no-skills-and-upgrades condition.
