Missing Books, Glitches & Progress Saving Guide
Nothing breaks your flow faster than shelving 9 books of an ancient century only to find the 10th tome clipped behind an archway or vanished. This emergency guide provides verified solutions directly from developer updates to respawn lost books, protect your save data, and clear visual ghost glitches.
If a book has clipped out of reach or seems missing from the room: open the in-game menu, click Save & Exit, and reload the game. The Godot engine automatically sweeps out-of-bounds entities and respawns them on the central accessible carpet.
How to Recover Missing or Clipped Tomes
Follow these 3 steps in exact order to recover lost books without risking your shelf completion records.
Check Column Blind Spots
Before assuming a game glitch, pan the camera completely around the 4 marble pillars in the center hall. Tomes tossed at high velocity can slide partially behind the collision box of decorative arches.
💡 Tip: Hold Spacebar to magnetize any nearby book hidden beneath furniture.Use Menu "Save & Exit"
Press Esc or click the gear icon to open settings, then select Save & Exit. Never close the browser tab directly, as an abrupt termination can disrupt the IndexedDB transaction currently writing your latest coin tally.
💡 Tip: Wait for automated bots to finish moving before saving.Forced Floor Respawn
Reload the webpage and click Continue. Upon loading, the game executes an entity coordinate check: any tome lacking a valid shelf position or falling outside room bounds is automatically placed back onto the main hall carpet.
✔ Verified: 100% of reported missing books recover with this reload.Save Mechanics & Anti-Data-Loss Checklist

IndexedDB: Where Your 299 Shelves Live
The browser edition of The Grand Book Archive: Tidy Up uses HTML5 IndexedDB (under origin v6p9d9t4.ssl.hwcdn.net on itch.io). Unlike simple tracking cookies that expire or get blocked by ad blockers, IndexedDB stores persistent binary chunks containing:
- Shelf State Bitfield: Which of the 299 shelves are completed and locked.
- Gold Coin Balance & Upgrades: Current levels of Dragonfly Bots, Multipliers, and Backpack Capacity.
- Floor Book Coordinates: The exact position of all unorganized tomes.
- Avoid Incognito / Private Browsing: Browsers automatically purge all IndexedDB storage the moment a private window is closed. Always play on your standard profile.
- Beware of CCleaner & "Clear Site Data": If you clear "Cookies and other site data", your book archive will be wiped back to shelf 0.
- Honor the 60-Second Auto-Save Interval: The game writes a background snapshot every 60 seconds. If you exit immediately after completing a shelf without using "Save & Exit", you risk rolling back that final minute.
The "Ghost Duplicate" Tome Glitch Explained
Some players report seeing an "extra book" lying on the carpet that cannot be picked up or interacted with, even though all 10 books of that set are already neatly on the shelf.
Why it happens: This is a harmless 2D canvas buffer artifact that occurs when browser display scaling is set to 125% or 150% in Windows display settings. The sprite graphic remains on screen for an extra render pass after its data entity has already transferred to the bookcase.
Zoom the camera in and out once using the mouse scroll wheel, or pan the view until the ghost tome leaves the screen. The Godot renderer will refresh the frame buffer and the duplicate sprite will vanish.
